Oxygen Breathes New Life Into Fitness With State-of-the-Art Boutique

When a disenchanted fitness center patron and mother of three dreamed of marrying the soothing luxury of a spa sanctuary with cutting edge exercise classes and equipment, the blueprints for Palm Beach County's hottest new fitness boutique was born.

"I was tired of the same old crowded, dirty, work-out center scene and wondered why the best of the spa, design and fitness worlds couldn't be joined under one roof," says Oxygen Health & Wellness brainchild and owner Kathy Theofilos who designed her 10,000-square-foot North Palm Beach fitness boutique with richly buffed slate and porcelain floors, earthy grasscloth and silk wallcoverings, sculpted pedestal sinks, and sweeping expanses of soothing colors and hi-tech lighting.

"The difference is that I am a club user not a gym owner. What you see here is everything that was on my wish list of the perfect club," says Theofilos. "The equipment, fitness classes and services embody the very latest in exercise science and the facilities are luxurious, so members can get a great workout, a relaxing massage and shower, and leave here feeling as if they just came from a spa."

Combined with cutting edge weight lifting and cardiovascular equipment, an entire yoga and aerobics studio features everything from Bikram yoga to Spin led by certified specialists. There are also private Pilates suites where licensed trainers guide members through essential core strengthening movements.

Theofilos is especially proud of her rainforest-designed kids room that features the latest toys and electronics to amuse today's savvy youth. "Being a mom, I know what kids need to be stimulated and entertained in an environment created just for them-not a back room that looks like an after thought." Theofilos has also introduced a Little Buddy Bootcamp for kids to educate and guide them in developing a healthy lifestyle.

This is not your typical fitness center, echoes designer Lisa Erdmann of Erdmann and Associates, in creating Oxygen's ethereal environment.

The men's locker room evokes a contemporary Asian feel with masculine sculpted pedestal sinks and mahogany lockers, while the Wedgewood-designed ladies locker room has an air of crisp, classical elegance highlighted by soft pastels and flower-bedecked pedestals. "We have created a very holistic space where members can relax, rejuvenate and get their bodies in shape while nurturing their spirit and strengthening their bodies," says Erdmann.
